Michael Lee “Mickey” Craghead, 74, of Covington, died Saturday, August 15, 2026 at the Brian Center Nursing and Rehab Center in Low Moor. He was born June 3, 1952, in Covington, a son of the late Bobby Lee Craghead and Dorothy “Dot” Fix King of Covington. Mickey was employed with the Alleghany County Sheriff’s Department for 38 years, retiring as a Captain in 2019. A 1974 graduate of Grace College in Winona Lake, Indiana, he earned a Bachelor of Arts degree. He was a lifelong member of Grace Brethren Church, where he faithfully served as treasurer since 2000. Mickey had a deep passion for youth work and remained close friends with many of the young people he mentored over the years. Devoted to his Lord and Savior and to his family, Mickey’s greatest joy was spending time with his great-nephews and great-niece, Samuel, Jack, and Claire. From a young age he enjoyed sports, playing baseball as a child and later coaching various teams. He remained a lifelong and devoted fan of the Virginia Cavaliers and the Indianapolis Colts. In addition to his mother, he is survived by his sister, Joan Craghead Foster; one brother, Jerry W. Craghead, Sr. (Melissa), all of Covington; three nephews, Jerry Craghead, Jr. (Beth), Jeremy Craghead (Jessica), and Josh Foster; two nieces, Kayla Crowder (Maurice) and Whitney Carper; three great-nephews, Samuel Craghead, Jack Craghead, and Darian Johnson; three great-nieces, Isabella Johnson, Kynleigh Smith, and Claire Craghead; and numerous cousins. A funeral service will be conducted on Wednesday, August 19, 2026 at 2:00 PM in the Arritt Funeral Home chapel with the Rev. David Schmall officiating. The family will receive their friends from 1:00 PM until service time at the funeral home. Interment will follow in Alleghany Memorial Park. Honorary pallbearers will be employees and former coworkers of the Alleghany County Sheriff’s office and the Men of Grace Brethren Church.
