Stephen Howard Woodie, age 60, of 103 Hallies Road, Covington, Virginia died on Sunday, May 10, 2026 at Summers County A.R.H. in Hinton, West Virginia. Stephen was born on October 19, 1965 in Beckley, West Virginia to Virgil and Polly Sizemore Woodie. He served in the United States Army, and was a salesman for Dodson Pest Control. He was of the Christian faith and enjoyed fishing, basketball, and watching University of West Virginia sports. He is survived by his wife, Tammy LaClair Woodie of Covington; his father, Reverend Virgil Woodie (Brenda) of Clifton Forge; his mother, Polly Woodie of Covington; his daughter, Jamie Woodie of Murfreesboro, TN; his son, Joshua Woodie of Covington; his sister, Kelli Winters (Randall Bowles) of Crab Orchard, WV; his brother, Christopher Woodie (Sherri) of Goose Creek, SC; and a number of nieces and nephews. In keeping with his wishes, his body has been cremated. A memorial service will be held on Wednesday, May 20, 2026 at 1:00 PM in the chapel of Nicely Funeral Home, Clifton Forge with Reverend Virgil Woodie and Reverend Christopher Woodie officiating. James Newberry

James Ambler “Jimmy” Newberry, age 61, of Clifton Forge, Virginia passed away Friday, May 8, 2026. He was born on June 9, 1964 in Union, West Virginia to the late Judge Emory Newberry and Barbara Sue Brooks Newberry. He was a transportation driver for VA Taxi and Transit Company. He loved antique cars, especially 1957 Chevy’s, and riding motorcycles. He loved spending time with family, gardening and always enjoyed having a “taste” of his favorite food. Jimmy never met a stranger and always had a smile on his face. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Benita Leigh. He is survived by a brother, Phillip Daniel Newberry (Melissa); three nieces, Kelsey Newberry Cash, Heather Andrews (Thomas), and Cheylane Moore (Kyle); an uncle, Phillip Brooks; an aunt, Mary Bowyer; ten great nieces and nephews; and a special best friend, David Putnam. Brenda Bartocci

Brenda Sue VanMaaren Bartocci, age 68, of 316 Main Street, Clifton Forge, Virginia died on Thursday, May 7, 2026 at her residence. Brenda was born October 25, 1957 in Kalamazoo, MI to the late Richard VanMaaren and Sara Schreuder VanMaaren. She received a degree in business, and was an Administrative Assistant for the Alleghany Highlands School Board and was an avid quilter. She married Charles Bartocci on November 3, 1979, which brought a lifetime of love and adventure. In addition to her husband, Charles, of Clifton Forge, Brenda is survived by four sons, Charlie Bartocci (Tiffany), Philip Bartocci (Sara), Greg Bartocci (Cassie), and Eric Bartocci (Dani); siblings, Richard “Rick” VanMaaren (Jane) and Joan Baylor (Tim); six grandchildren, Colton, Emerson, Harper, Cora, Theodore, and Penelope; her husband’s siblings, John Bartocci (Sue), Mary Bartocci, Steve Bartocci (Bella), Fran Lemley, and Paul Bartocci (Charyl); and a number of nieces and nephews. Clara Anderson

Clara Rebecca Brown Anderson, age 96, formerly of Glen Wilton, Virginia died on Tuesday, May 5, 2026 at Hickory Hill Retirement Community in Burkeville, Virginia. Clara was born on April 10, 1930 in Glen Wilton to the late James Ernest and Annie Bell Brown. She was a family-oriented homemaker throughout her life and a dedicated, caring wife and mother. She was a kind lady who put everyone before herself and was known for cooking dinners and making pies to share to with others. She loved being in the sunshine working in her flowers, and in later years, enjoyed traveling with her family. In addition to her parents, Clara was preceded in death by her husband, Herman Boston Anderson, Jr. in 2006; three sisters, Annie Belle Yancy, Grace Thompson, and Mary Holloman; and two brothers, James E. Brown, Jr. and Robert Brown. She is survived by four daughters, Norma Jean Anderson of Burkeville, Dreama Anderson Walker of Richmond, Joy Ann Dean of Richmond, and Melissa Lee Anderson of Waynesboro; two sons, Herman Anderson III of Milwaukee, WI and Clarence Edward Anderson of Richmond; a son-in-law, Anthony “Tony” Dean of Richmond; a sister-in-law, Shirley Brown of Covington; a grandson, Myles Edward Anderson; and a number of nieces and nephews. Charles "Wesley" Duncan

Charles “Wesley” Duncan II, age 81, of 304 Bath Street, Clifton Forge, Virginia died on Monday, May 4, 2026 at the Brian Center Health and Rehabilitation Center in Low Moor, Virginia. Wesley was born on December 4, 1944 in Clifton Forge to the late Charles Wesley “Steve” Duncan I and Mary Lee Beckner Duncan. He was a graduate of Clifton Forge High School and a retired machinist for the Chesapeake and Ohio Railroad. He was a life member of the Clifton Forge Elks Lodge # 1065 B.P.O.E. as well as a member of the Clifton Forge Moose Lodge. In addition to his parents, Wesley was preceded in death by a baby brother. He is survived by his children, Yvonne Hall and Robert Duncan, a sister, Gail Wallace (Richard), and a brother, Richard Duncan, all of Clifton Forge; two grandchildren, Ryan Hall (Lychelle) and Bailey Hall; three great grandchildren, Kaliyah, Raegan, and Taj; a number of nieces and nephews; and many friends. Robert Eugene “Bob” Paice, age 93, of 9292 Botetourt Road, Eagle Rock, Virginia died on Sunday, May 3, 2026 at The Woodlands Health and Rehab, Clifton Forge. Bob was born on August 27, 1932 in Beckley, West Virginia to the late Russell E. and Lillian B. Stamper Paice. He was a retired truck driver for Meadowgold and attended Galatia Presbyterian Church. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, and playing golf. In addition to his parents, Bob was preceded in death by a brother, David Paice. He is survived by his wife, Janice Graham Vaughn Paice of Eagle Rock; a daughter, Rebecca Paice of Daniels, West Virginia; Janice’s children, Steve Vaughn (Donna) of Eagle Rock, and Sara Jane Easterday (George) of Damascus, MD; a host of grandchildren, great grandchildren, and great great grandchildren; as well as host of friends. Montie Kay Jefferies, Sr., age 87, of Glen Wilton, Virginia died Saturday, May 2, 2026 at Lewis Gale Hospital-Alleghany. He was born December 26, 1938 in Clifton Forge, Virginia to the late Percy Crockcett Jeffries and Beulah Evelyn Herron Jeffries. He was a retired electrician for Acadia Polymer of Iron Gate and a member of Victory Baptist Church, Clifton Forge. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, camping and spending time with his grandchildren. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Judith Bailey. Alma Adams Haley, “Ms. A”, age 76, of 1700 Main Street, Building148, Apt 7, Clifton Forge, Virginia died on Friday, May 1, 2026 at her residence. Alma was born on October 10, 1949 in Clifton Forge to the late William Edward Anderson and Leola Elizabeth Anderson. Following graduation from high school, she became a Licensed Practical Nurse and retired as a dietary supervisor for Liberty University. Ms. A was a devoted believer in her Father, Jesus Christ, and she enjoyed writing poetry and playing cards. In addition to her parents, Alma was preceded in death by her first husband, James Arthur Adams, Jr.; her second husband, James Edward Johnson; a daughter, Quintina Haley; a sister, Gwendolyn Gausney; and a granddaughter, Laci-Ann. Jerry Reid

Jerry Meadows Reid, ag 82, of Clifton Forge, Virginia passed from this life to his Heavenly Father, on Sunday, April 12, 2026. Jerry was born March 16, 1944 at the Chesapeake and Ohio Hospital in Clifton Forge to the late Roy Barrett "Bud" Reid and Nancy Estelle Rogers Reid. He is survived by his two sisters, Nancy Barrett Reid Grenda (John) and Lynn Pless (Jeff)… as well as the love of his life, Miriam (Mimi) McFarland. Jerry moved back to Clifton Forge in 2023, and was known for wearing his colorful car shirt and making strangers laugh by offering to sell them one of his cars. Where there was music, Jerry was dancing and lifting sprits. The story of his graduating from the University of Virginia at the age of 70 can still be seen by internet search of ”JerryReidUVA”. Prior to this, he raced sports cars (SCCA) for 30 years on many East Coast tracks, published Motor Sports Magazine, and produced a TV series called “Pit Wall Productions”. Even more than these accomplishments, he loved writing and has many sports articles, stories, and a book left unfinished. Jerry will be remembered for his smile and the joy he brought to others. Ruth Keyser

Ruth Scruggs Keyser, 93, of Clifton Forge, VA, passed away on March 30, 2026 after a brief illness. She was born on February 9, 1933 to the late Claude H. and Bessie Lee Fairburn Scruggs. In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by her infant daughter; her husband of 60 years, Kenneth Kyle Keyser; brothers Ike Scruggs, Oscar Scruggs, Harry Scruggs, James Scruggs, and Bobby Scruggs; sisters Mildred Scruggs Hudgins and Helen Scruggs Reese; and several nieces and nephews. She is survived by her daughter Robin Keyser Pullen (Eddie) of Kingsport, TN; son Steven Kyle Keyser (Joanna) of Martinsville, VA; granddaughters Kate Hall (Brandon) of Knoxville, TN and Sarah Beth Morrison (Gregory) of Martinsville, VA; grandsons Andy Pullen (Sarah) of Kingsport, TN and Zachary Keyser (Laura) of Martinsville, VA; and sister and best friend Mary Scruggs Hayes of Radford, VA. She is also survived by eight great-grandchildren: Emma Jane, Blake, Clara, Jackson, Charlie, Benjamin, Frankie, and Allie, as well as numerous nieces, nephews, and extended family members. Ruth was a proud mother and grandmother. She loved nothing more than sitting on her porch swing with family and friends or a good long phone call to catch up with those she loved. She loved photographs and documenting memories of her family. She was a long term member of Central United Methodist Church. The family wishes to express its deep gratitude to the team at Wexford House in Kingsport, TN for their dedication and loving care and to Kathy and Chris Smith for their unwavering companionship bringing immense joy to our Mom’s last few months.
