Bobby Joe Gill, 65, of Covington, died Friday, April 17, 2026 at his residence. He was born April 8, 1961 in White Sulphur Springs, WV, a son of the late Julian Gill and Hilda Grace Bates. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Patricia Gill; two brother Jamie Gill, Billy Gill his twin and a grandson, Zane Hassell. Bobby worked for many years as a painting contractor throughout the state. He was an avid NASCAR and Washington Commanders fan. Survivors include four daughters, Kayla Gill of Hopewell, Nicole (Robert) Hassell-Lane of Kill Devil Hills, NC, Patricia Gill of Laplata, MD, and Lydia (Devin) Ward of Georgia; grandchildren, Cannon, Grace, Abigail, Wilder, and Colton; two brothers, Keith Byer and Arlan Bates, Jr, both of Covington; and several nieces and nephews. Samantha Kay Stanley

Samantha Kay Stanley, age 49, of Covington, died Wednesday, April 15, 2026, at her residence. She was born November 10, 1976, in South Carolina, a daughter of the late Marilyn Sue Coleman Howarth (Alan Howarth) and Richard Carlyle Strickland (Gail Morrison) of Goldsboro, North Carolina. Samantha was feisty, but once you got to know her, she revealed a deeply soft-hearted and caring nature. She loved her daughter and her entire family fiercely. Though she could be guarded at first, those closest to her knew the strength of her devotion. Caring for her nieces and nephews was one of the greatest joys of her life. In addition to her father, survivors include her daughter, Sarah Michelle Stanley; a sister, Christine (Ricky) Thompson of Covington; a brother, James Alan Howarth of Longs, South Carolina; one step-sister, Melanie Matthews; a step-brother, Matt Matthews; several nieces, nephews, and cousins including Luca, Chandler, Jaxton, Jaycen, Joseph, Timothy and Cody. Tammie Simmons Hubbard

Tammie Simmons Hubbard, 59, of Covington, died Monday, April 13, 2026 at LewisGale Medical Center in Salem. She was born October 17, 1966 in Alleghany County, a daughter of William “Sonny” Simmons of Covington and the late Nancy Scott Simmons. Tammie cherished spending time with family and friends, taking leisurely car rides, and listening to her favorite music. In addition to her father, she is survived by a daughter, Jessica Hubbard; one granddaughter, Alexus Williams; a great-granddaughter, Charlotte Williams; one brother, Dale Simmons, all of Covington; and several nieces. Ralph Lewis "Pie" Anderson

Ralph Lewis Anderson, affectionally known as “Pie”, passed away April 11, 2026 at LewisGale Alleghany Hospital in Low Moor. He was born November 9, 1939, in Oriskany, Virginia, a son of the late Max and Ruth Bowers Anderson. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his siblings, Arlene (Sam) Anderson, Charles (Carol) Anderson, Boyd (Carol) Anderson, Lenwood (Judy) Anderson, and Mont Ray (Jewel) Anderson. Pie loved collecting coins, stamps, and model cars. He enjoyed researching genealogy and had a particular fondness for radishes and fried taters. For many years, he worked as a newspaper printer, skillfully setting type in the classic Standard and Pronto styles that were once staples of the industry. He served his country in the U.S. Army. Survivors include several nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews, great-great-nieces and great-great nephews, along with dear family friend, Harold Clark. In keeping with his wishes, his body has been cremated. A memorial service will be held at 2:00 PM on Saturday, April 18, 2026 in the chapel of Arritt Funeral Home with the Rev. Carl Jacob Bogar, Sr.

Carl Jacob Bogar, Sr., 88, of 5901 Bens Run Road, passed away at his residence on Friday, April 10, 2026. Mr. Bogar was born on September 29, 1937, in Alleghany County to the late Jacob and Lillian Wright Bogar. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his loving wife, Betty Tucker Bogar; three sisters, Goldie Tucker, Jeanette Bess, and Marlene Wolfe; a very special son, Harry Tucker Jr. “Pedro”; and a daughter, Janie Tucker Brookman. Mr. Bogar retired after 38 years of service with Bartlett Tree Experts and Wilson Tree Company. He is survived by four sisters, Arlene Shinault and husband Ted, Judy Clark and husband David, Robin Gillispie and husband Bobby, and Wanda Fridley; two brothers, Jeff Bogar and wife Wanda, and Clifford Bogar; three sons, Carl "Chubby" Bogar Jr., Randy Bogar and wife Brenda, and Stephen “Dinky” Bogar and wife Tammy; and four daughters, Cathy Walton, Myrtle Castillo, Evelyn Tucker, and Sally Broughman and husband Raymond. He is also survived by 16 grandchildren, many great-grandchildren, and great-great-grandchildren. Carl also leaves behind special friends, Paul Fridley, Rocky Hicks, and Keith and Nancy Hicks. Dallas Dewey Bates

Dallas Dewey Bates, age 76, of Covington, died Saturday, April 4, 2026, at the Staunton Post Acute and Rehabilitation Center, surrounded by his family. He was born in Winston Salem, NC, and was preceded in death by his parents, the late Dallas A. Bates and Emma (Pettyjohn) Bates. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by a son, Jason Bates; two brothers and three sisters. Dallas served his country in the National Guard and was employed with ALSCO Linen Company for 39 years. He loved working out in his yard, watching old westerns that carried him out west. He loved the Atlanta Braves and the Washington Commanders, and found peace on the banks of the Jackson River and in sunsets at Edisto Island, SC— more than anything, he loved his pets, his cup of coffee, and his family. He leaves to mourn his loss a daughter, Sarah Helen (John Grimshaw) Bates of Yorktown, three sons, Matthew (Lori) Bates of Winston Salem, NC, Anthony (Tara) Bates of Boone, NC, Andrew (Katrina) Bates of Covington; seven grandchildren; a brother, Kenneth (Young) Bates of Woodbridge, a sister, Donna (Steve) Brown of Winston Salem, NC; and his former spouse and friend of many years, Debra L. Rita Guth Lee, age 82, of Covington, died Friday, April 3, 2026, at the Woodlands Health and Rehab Center in Clifton Forge. She was born April 5, 1943, in Covington, and was preceded in death by her parents, the late Garnet C. Guth and Alma Humphries Guth; her husband, Robert W. Lee in 1999; her sister, Wanda Jean Guth. Rita was an avid reader, thoroughly enjoyed crocheting and being outside working in her garden. Her last occupation was managing the Virginia Welcome Center where it was always a pleasure to greet the travelers. She leaves to mourn her loss, a son, Robert (Deirdre) Lee, Jr. of Daleville; two daughters, Christy (Tim) Kimberlin of Covington, Angie (David) Hurt of Clifton Forge; five grandchildren, Brandon Lee, Quincy Edwards, Andrea Buchanan, Ashley Wolfe, Kristen Lee; nine great children; a brother, Randy Furlong of Covington; a brother-in-law, Gene and his wife, Vicki Lee of Covington; Aunt Amelia Dressler of Covington; numerous other family members. Betty Christian Linkenhoker

Betty Lou Christian Linkenhoker, age 91, of Covington, passed away peacefully on March 26, 2026 at the Woodlands Health and Rehab Center in Clifton Forge. Born on April 12, 1934, in Keaster, West Virginia, Betty was a devoted wife, loving mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and a woman of deep faith. She was a lifelong member of the Brethen faith, which guided her life with quiet strength, kindness, and compassion as she faithfully served her church community. She taught Sunday school at Grace Brethen Church for 30 years, a role she held close to her heart and took great pride in. Her kindness, patience, and deep faith left a lasting impact on the many lives she touched through her teachings. Betty shared 71 wonderful years of marriage with her beloved husband, James “Jim” Linkenhoker; they built a life centered on family, love, and unwavering commitment. She was a dedicated mother to her son, James “Jamie” Linkenhoker and wife Meta, found great joy in her role as grandmother to Ashton (Adam) Watts, Tara (Chris) Linkenhoker, and Brette (Richard) Linkenhoker, as well as several great-grandchildren. Michael Haven Persinger

Michael Haven Persinger, age 60, of Covington, died Monday, March 23, 2026, at his residence. He was born May 4, 1965, in Alleghany County, a son of Marvin and Mae Ailstock Persinger of Cloverdale. In addition to his parents, he is survived by his wife of thirty- eight years, Lisa Kemper Persinger of Covington; a daughter, Megan (Evan) Nicely of Covington; a son, Adam Persinger of Lexington; one granddaughter, Ella Rose Nicely; a sister, Susan Howell of Daleville; his mother and father-in-law, Lewis “Butch” and Lana Kemper of Covington; a niece, Bailey Howell; and numerous other family members. Mike was a faithful member of Temple Baptist Church. He served as vice-president of Dawn Warehousing, as chairman of the board at Highlands Community Bank, and as a member of both the former Lions Club and Hot Springs Rotary Club. Richard Charles Smith, Jr.

Richard Charles Smith, Jr., 56, of Covington, died Sunday, March 22, 2026 at his residence. He was born August 23, 1969 in New Jersey, a son of the late Richard Smith, Sr. and Barbara Ann Spalding Smith. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a brother, Greg Smith. Rich worked for many years as an extruding machine operator. In his spare time, he was passionate about automobiles in all forms—whether it was watching NASCAR and Formula 1 races, competing in slot car racing, or cheering on his favorite driver, Dale Earnhardt. Above all, he was a caring and supportive son and brother, always ready to lend a hand, look out for his family, and put others first. Survivors include his brother, Chris Smith and his wife, Emily, of Covington; his nieces and nephew, Kiersten Smith, Charlotte Smith, Lillian Smith, Julia Smith, and Christopher Smith. Dianne Lynn Ross Huckle

Dianne Lynn (Ross) Huckle, 76, of Covington, passed away peacefully on March 21, 2026, surrounded by her family. She leaves behind a legacy of devotion, resilience, and deep love for those she held close. Dianne was born on April 30, 1949, in Cheyenne, Wyoming, to Jack Ross and Ruth (West Ross) Ewell. She was preceded in death by her parents; her beloved husband, Robert Lee Huckle Sr.; her brother, Darrell Ross; her sisters, Sharon Collins and Karen Ayala; her son, Fred Allen; and her grandsons, Trebor Huckle and Rocky Lawson. Dianne was the cherished wife of Robert Lee Huckle Sr., whom she married on January 4, 2002. Together, they shared 22 wonderful years filled with laughter, companionship, simple joys, and multiple eyerolls over the years. She treasured their time spent exploring the countryside—often sparked by Bob’s familiar words, “Let’s go for a ride.” Whether fishing, sitting on the porch, or simply enjoying life side by side, those moments meant everything to her. She is survived by her half-sisters Patty Jones and Peggy Weaver; her children, Rainey Stevens and Tommy Stevens (Nancy); and her stepchildren, Robert Bradley Barnett (Racheal), Robert Lee Huckle Jr., Lynnetta Working (Preston), Bobbi Robinson, and Billi McNeill (Brad). Dianne also leaves behind a large and loving family of grandchildren: Chayse Lawson, Bella Crowther, David Davila, Matthew Allen, Austen, Isaac, and Basil Working, Amanda Robinson (Craig), Sammi Hyatt (Chad), Toby Huckle, Kylie Helton (Josh), Jase McClintock (Shaina), Brett McNeill (Nyela), Cole McClintock (Maddie), Chase Blaine, Stevanna Trenkamp, Bobby, Dalton Huckle (Katie), Hailey Huckle, Syler and Gavin Gonzales, and Mayleigh and Wesley Barnett, along with 24 great-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. Dianne will be remembered for her loving heart, her unwavering dedication to family, and the quiet strength that carried her through life. She was, in every sense, a survivor. Lewis Elbert Porter, Jr.

Lewis Elbert Porter, Jr., 57, of Covington, died Friday, March 20, 2026 at his residence. He was born June 2, 1968 in Alleghany County, a son of the late Lewis Porter, Sr. and Pansy Warden Porter Caldwell. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his step-father, Danny Caldwell. Lewis was a skilled small engine mechanic by trade, able to diagnose problems just by listening to the sound of the engine. In his spare time, he enjoyed hunting, fishing, gardening, and was an avid firearms enthusiast. He had a deep love for music of all kinds, though Aerosmith was always his favorite band. He also cherished driving, taking road trips, and going out to eat with friends and family. Survivors include his wife, Susan Kay Porter of Clifton Forge; a daughter, Melinda Kay Porter (David Ferris) of Covington; two sons, Danny Porter of Low Moor and Michael Porter of Harrisonburg; an expected grandchild due in October 2026; one sister, Theresa Porter of Low Moor; nephews, Ricky Dudley of Covington and Kasey Dudley of Roanoke; his beloved dog, Izzy Marie; and numerous close friends in Alleghany and Rockingham Counties. Geraldine Fourquean Allen

Geraldine Fourquean Allen, age 79, departed this life on March 20, 2026 at her residence after a short illness, surrounded by her loved ones. She was the daughter of the late Sarah Jordan Smith and Roy E. “Pape” Fourquean. Geraldine was preceded in death by her parents; her husband for 34 years, Ronald Allen, Sr.; a daughter, Sherry Allen; a son, Stevie Allen; two sister-in-law’s, Barbara Allen and Linda Wyatt; three brothers-in-law’s, Donald Lee Allen, Ricky Allen, Climmie Lee Wyatt. Geraldine attended the former Watson High School, was a faithful/active member of Pine Street Baptist Church, serving on the Hospitality Ministry, Decorating Ministry, Homecoming Ministry, and wherever she was needed. She enjoyed singing and was a member of the Willing Worker’s Choir and Ministry, the Combined Choirs of the church and a member of the Resurrecting Praise Community Choir. Ronald and Geraldine traveled every chance they got going down south to visit their daughter Sherry and other family members. Geraldine was employed for years at the Halmode Sewing Factory until they closed, Rose's Discount Store starting as a greeter and was promoted to the Domestic Department and Cashier until closing and then to Food Lion as a cashier. After her retirement from City Hall, she was a faithful member of the Watson Alumni Association, enjoying the school reunions held every two years; the “Diners Club” at the Senior Center; a supporter of “Soul Rhythm Line” dancers, and was faithful participating in all events until her illness prohibited her last year. Geraldine enjoyed baking, making homemade rolls and fudge, sharing them with her friends and her church family. She created and maintained strong friendships throughout every phase of her life. She had a bubbly personality, making everyone laugh at her witty remarks and an awesome smile when she wanted to, unless she was upset and then it went downhill fast. Geraldine leaves to cherish her memory her daughter, Teresa Caroll Jackson of Roanoke; six grandchildren, Michael (L.C.), Delmar, Shaneitra, Markiel, Justin, Ronald; seven great-grandchildren, Michael, Omari, Ryland, Aubrey, Theodore, Amina, Ziylan; two sisters, Brenda Mae Jackson and Jesse Thorton; a dear family member, Clarice Halsey; two goddaughters, Caprice Reynolds, Danielle Helton whom she adored; two special friends, Elizabeth Hunter, Linda Cook; a circle of girlfriends; and many other family and friends, too numerous to name. David Preston Price, Sr.

David Preston Price, Sr., of Covington, died Saturday, March 14, 2026 at Roanoke Memorial Hospital. He was born in Covington on May 20, 1943, to his parents, the late Lacy Edward and Violet Mays Price. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Ruth Burdette Price; two brothers, Charles Price, Ralph Price; a sister, Carolyn Robinson. David proudly served his country in the United States Navy. He was employed with the Community Service Board and was a member of the Board of Supervisors (Boiling Spring District) and the Curtis A. Smith VFW Post 1033. Surviving to mourn his loss are his three daughters, Melinda Kathryn Lee and her husband Bob of Jacksonville Beach, FL., Michele Lynette Wilson of Port Orange, Florida, Marie Ansonja Young and her husband, Allen of Roanoke; a son, David Preston Price, Jr. of Covington; six beloved grandchildren, T.J. Joyce Victoria Guilfoil

Joyce Victoria Guilfoil, age 66, of Covington, died Friday, March 13, 2026, at Lewis-Gale Medical Center in Salem. She was born, June 10, 1959, in Lapeer, Michigan, and was preceded in death by her parents, the late James Vaughan, Sr. and Gloria Heath Vaughn; her husband, Clarence Guilfoil; and a brother, Arthur Vaughan. Joyce was an employee at the Springs Nursing Home in Bath County in the dietary department. Surviving to mourn her loss are two daughters, J. J. Guilfoil of West Branch, Michigan and K.C. Smith of Saint Helen, Michigan; her companion, Clarence Taylor of Covington; two grandsons, Austin Guilfoil of West Branch, Michigan, Edward Vinyard; two sisters, Delores Saigh of Fraser, Michigan, Shelly Wlter of Imlay, Michigan; one brother, James Vaughan, Jr. of Columbiaville, Michigan; and many other family members. Charlotte Fix Redmon

Charlotte Fix Redmon, age 86, of Covington, died Wednesday, March 11, 2026, at her residence. She was born, July 8, 1939, in Alleghany County, and was preceded in death by her parents, the late Roy and Myrtle Fix; a son, Kenneth Redmon; two sisters, Phyllis Ridgewell, Loretta Persinger; four brothers-in-law, Harold Ridgewell, Ralph Persinger, Bobby Craghead, Basil King; two daughters-in-law, Peggy Redmon, Lora Redmon; and the father of her children, Chester Redmon. Following her graduation from Covington High School in 1956, she left Covington going to work for the Pentagon in Washington, DC, working for the navy in a civilian worker role. She returned home to work twenty plus years for the Social Service Administration; after retiring from that position she went to work for Larry Wright at 7-11 also known as Wright’s Convenience Store for several years. She left that job going to work for Social Services in Clifton Forge until they closed; leaving there to go the Alleghany County Social Services, retiring from there at the age of 82. Charlotte was a member of Mallow Presbyterian Church for many years. Leaving to mourn her loss is her daughter, Robin (Ivan) Miller of Lexington; her son, Roy (Penny) Redmon of Gauley Ridge, WV; five grandchildren, Brooke (Junior) Hiner, Sam Redmon, Steven (Jennifer) Redmon, Rebekah (Colton) Redmon, Hannah Redmon; three great-grandchildren, Catie Lipes, Ann Alise Hatcher, Wyatt Redmon; a sister, Dorothy King; and a number of nieces and nephews. In keeping with Mrs. Redmon’s wishes, her body has been cremated and a private memorial service will be held at a later date. Nancy Heck Cash

Nancy Heck Cash, 92, of Covington, received her Heavenly Promotion on Saturday, March 7, 2026 at her home surrounded by her family. Born on March 19, 1933 in Fincastle, Nancy moved to Covington with her husband, Rev. William M. Cash and their five children in 1963 for him to pastor Calvary Baptist Church and Moss Run Baptist Church. She served these churches in quiet dedication alongside her husband until his retirement in 1999. She also served as Bookkeeper for Cash Masonry Contractor even after William’s death. She was a member of Immanuel Baptist Church. She is preceded in death by her husband, William M. Cash; daughter, Larua Ruth Hinojosa; parents, Howard and Bessie Heck; brothers, Rodney Heck and Donald Heck; sisters, Bettie Looney, Dorothy Crews, Janice Gore; and sister-in-law, Jean Cash. Nancy is survived by four children, Stephen (Peggy) Cash, Deborah (Warren) Burch of Troutville, James (Michelle) Cash, and Andrew (Karen) Cash; son-in-law, Richard Hinojosa of Texas; nine grandchildren, Phillip Cash, Lindsey Cash, Brianne (Mark) Gilbert, Matthew Croy, Renee Cash, Jeremy Cash, Olivia Hinojosa, Meghan Cash, and Macyn Cash; four great-grandchildren, Jordan Gilbert, Avery Gilbert, Nikolas Croy, and Aaden Cash; one brother, Howard (Linda) Heck, Jr.; one sister, JoAnn Jayne; one sister-in-law, Doris T. Heck; one brother-in-law, David L. Cash; and numerous nieces and nephews. Richard Charles Smith, Sr.

Richard Charles Smith, Sr., 84, of Covington, died Friday, March 6, 2026, at the Alleghany Health and Rehab in Clifton Forge. He was born August 15, 1941 in Brooklyn, NY, a son of the late Charles and Margaret Donohue Smith. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Irene Cohen Smith; a son, Greg Smith; one step-granddaughter, Sarah Berger; and his ex-wife, Barbara Spalding Smith. Richard was a proud U.S. Air Force veteran who served honorably in the early 1960s, including a tour abroad in Pakistan and a station assignment at McGuire Air Force Base near Wrightstown, New Jersey. Following his military service, he applied his financial expertise as Director of Finance at Raritan Bay Medical Center (formerly known as Raritan Medical Center) in Perth Amboy, New Jersey, where he contributed to the hospital's operations for several years. In his leisure time, Richard enjoyed the excitement of gaming and trips to the casino, a pastime he pursued with joy and enthusiasm. Survivors include his sons, Richard C. Smith, Jr., Chris Smith and his wife, Emily, and, grandchildren, Kiersten Smith, Charlotte Smith, Lillian Smith, and Christopher Smith; Julia Smith; three step-grandchildren, Amanda Lehnert, Nicole Berger, and Bryan Berger. Teresa Cash Vance

Teresa Jane Cash Vance, age 63, of Covington, passed away March 6, 2026, at Lewis Gale Hospital Alleghany surrounded by her family. She was born January 1, 1963 in Alleghany County, and was preceded in death by her parents, the late James and Dorothy Cash; and three brothers-in-laws, Junior May, Chip Dimon, Butch Brewster. Teresa shared 22 loving years of marriage with her husband, Gary Vance, building a life filled with memories, love, and devotion to their family. She was a proud and devoted mother of two sons, Robert Cash (Caitlin) and Dustin Cash (Kellie). She adored her grandchildren Dillon, Savannah, Brady, Gracie, Carper, Quincy, and Dixon, who brought her endless joy. She leaves to mourn her loss as well, her loving sisters Ruby May, Sheila Brewster, and Donna Dimon; two special nieces that she considered daughters, Casey Brewster and Samantha Hubbard; along with many other nieces, nephews, extended family members, and friends who will forever cherish her memory. Her presence will be greatly missed by all who loved her She had a special love for animals and a gentle heart for all creatures. She never met an animal she didn’t want to care for or bring home, and her kindness toward animals reflected the compassion she showed to everyone in her life. Teresa will always be remembered for her love of family, her caring heart, and the kindness she shared with everyone around her. Her presence will be greatly missed, but the memories she created will live on in the hearts of those who loved her. In keeping with her wishes, her body will be cremated. Ella Lucille Weikel Perry

Ella Lucille Weikel Perry, 84, of Staunton, died Friday, March 6, 2026 at Brookdale Senior Living in Staunton. She was born June 28, 1941 in Alleghany County, a daughter of the late Ralph and Lucille Robinson Weikel. Ella spent her life as a dedicated homemaker, quietly devoting herself to raising her family, maintaining a warm and welcoming home, and offering steady, loving support to those around her day after day. That same gentle, caretaking spirit extended to animals—she had a deep and genuine love for them throughout her life. Left to cherish her memory is her husband of 61 years, Sharn Perry of Staunton; one son, Steven (Terri) Edwards of Chesterfield two daughters, Leah (Tommy) Musselman of Afton and Dana Romanin (Petri) of Stuarts Draft; seven grandchildren, Rachel Edwards, Thomas (Netta) Musselman, Andrew Musselman, David Musselman, Kadri Romanin, Nathaniel Romanin, and Evan Romanin; one sister, Beverly Johnson of Covington; a niece, Lora (Shannon) Crawford of Covington; one great-niece, Marley Pillow; and one great-nephew, Dakota Crawford. A funeral service will be held at Arritt Funeral Home on Saturday, March 14, 2026 at 2:00 PM. Interment will be made in Mt. Pleasant Cemetery.
