Mrs. Sue Martin Burns, age 85, of Covington, died Wednesday, September 23, 2026, at LewisGale Hospital, Alleghany. Mrs. Burns was born February 1, 1941 in the Sweet Chalybeate section of Alleghany County, the daughter of the late Forrest Madison (Frosty) Martin and Nettie Ann Schumaker Martin. She was a graduate of Dunlap High School. Over her distinguished working career, she had been employed by several local businesses most notably J.C Penney and Jackson River Community Credit Union before her retirement. Sue was a longtime and faithful member of First Christian Church. An undeniably beautiful lady, Mrs. Burns was known for always being well dressed in perfectly matching outfits. She loved to go shopping (especially for clothes) and traveling (especially trips to Myrtle Beach, SC with her family). Most of all, she loved sitting on her front porch, drinking coffee and eating dessert (anything chocolate) while watching the traffic go by and talking to her neighbors. Mrs. Burns is survived by a son, Roger D. Burns; a daughter, Leigh Ann Burns; a beloved grandson, Brandon David Burns; the mother of her grandson, Dianna Burns; a brother, Bob Martin and wife, Lisa; lifelong friend, Nancy Winebriner and husband, Wally; a great aunt, Jenny Schumaker; nieces and nephews, Vickie Vance and husband, Chris, Melinda Mann, Larry Mann, Donna Kidd, Steve Mann and Jeffrey Mann and wife, Reanne; a number of nieces and nephews and cousins; as well as the wonderful member of her "family", David Palmer and wife, Debbie, Ernie Palmer and wife, Mary Ann; Clay Hayslett, Tammy Law and friend, Tom; Schuyler and family, John and family, Jessica and family, Ty and family, Ethan and family and Kara and family. In addition to her parents, Mrs. Burns was preceded in death by the father of her children, Larry Kenneth Burns; a sister, Garnet Ann (Sally) Mann as well as numerous aunts, uncles, cousins and wonderful friends. A funeral service will be conducted at 11:00 A.M Saturday, September 26, 2026, from the chapel of Loving Funeral Home with Rev. Bill Gilliland officiating. Interment will follow in Sweet Chalybeate Cemetery. The family will receive friends on Friday evening from 6:00 P.M. until 8:00 P.M. at Loving Funeral Home.
