Al is now the Station Manager at Highlands Media Group and is now the host of "Highway 64 with Big Al" on 103.5 Big Country/WKEY AM1340. He has a girlfriend, Debbie Griffin whom he loves to spend time with and two fur babies, miniature poms, Ceirra and Kona.

Here’s What’s Happening sponsored by West Rock for the week of April 19, 2021

--The 70th Annual National Day of Prayer will be observed in the City of Covington on Thursday, May 6th at 12 p.m. at Good News Church in Covington. The theme this year is, “Lord, Pour Out Your Love, Life, and Liberty, from 2 Corinthians 3:17. The National Day of Prayer was set by an act of Congress, set aside for the first Thursday in May each year. Americans across the country are called to pray for our nation’s safety, strength, and protection as one nation under God, with liberty, and justice for all. Pray that we will love God and each other so much, that we will agree clearly, unite visibly, and pray extraordinarily for the next Great Spiritual Awakening in America! Let’s join our hearts together in prayer for our nation, community, and loved ones on May 6th at Good News Church in Covington.

--Kars Unlimited will be hosting a Cruise In at the River Rock Amphitheater in Covington on Sunday May 2, 2021 from 2:00 PM to 6:00 PM. This event is being held as a benefit for Jani Williamson. Jani is a local resident who is currently battling cancer. She is currently in remission, but she has incurred enormous medical expenses. The cruise in itself is a FREE event open to anyone. Donations will be accepted, and 50/50 drawing will be held, as well as the raffling off of assorted items during the evening. There will also be a bake sale held during the cruise in, with a great selection of homemade baked goods. DJ Eugene "The Lone Wolf" Windsor will be on site playing your favorite cruisin' music, and there will be door prizes. For more information, please contact any Kars Unlimited member. In the interest of current state guidelines, you are asked to respect each other’s space and abide by current policies. Hand sanitizer will be available for use at the tables. Kars Unlimited is committed to hosting a safe event.

--Back for 2021, it’s Kars Unlimited Cruise Nights, beginning Friday, May 7. Cruising the town, just like the old days! The Cruise Night will also take place on May 21, June 4 and June 25, July 9 and July 23, and August 6 and August 20. Each Cruise night will begin at 6 p.m.

--Covid 19 vaccines are now available at Alleghany Family Pharmacy, located beside Subway in Covington. There is no cost, but please bring all of your insurance information including your red, white, and blue Medicare card if you have one. Call 540-965-2160 to make an appointment. --The Alleghany Foundation will be hosting an online 24-hour fundraising event on June 15th, to support the nonprofit organizations that make this area stronger. This fundraising event is open to all nonprofits with programs that serve the populations of Covington and Alleghany County, and there is no registration fee! Organizations can register at GiveLocalAH.org. The Alleghany Foundation will be providing over $30,000 in prizes and bonus incentives that will foster friendly competition between organizations and encourage everybody to give local!
Nonprofit organizations interested in participating in Give Local Alleghany Highlands have until May 14th to register, but registering early will provide opportunities to participate in free webinars and access to other resources to help make the event a success. --Ridgeline Physical Therapy is currently accepting donations for the Alleghany Humane Society and their Community Pet Food Pantry. Specific items needed include Friskees Canned Cat Food, Temptations Cat Treats, Kitten Replacement Milk, Pedigree Wet/Dry Dog Food, Marrow Bones, Alpo Snaps, Dog/Cat Toys, and Blankets. All name brand foods are welcome for the Community Pet Food Pantry.

--The City of Covington has announced that a Spring Clean Up is still planned and citizens will be given ample notice as to the schedule. The city is currently working with state agencies to permit an increase in the daily tonnage limit at Peter’s Mountain Landfill to ensure staff and citizens a smooth transition with spring cleanup. --COVID-19 vaccination efforts have advanced to Phase 2 in the Central Shenandoah Health District. All individuals age 16 and over in Rockbridge, Bath, and Highland Counties, and the Cities of Lexington, and Buena Vista, will be eligible to receive the COVID-19 vaccine. --Coming in May, the Virginia Department of Health will partner with the Blue Ridge Independent Living Center to host a clinic for individuals with disabilities. The clinic will be held on Wednesday, May 5 between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. If you need an accommodation to participate in this clinic, such as assistance with transportation costs, American Sign Language interpreter, etc. please let the VDH staff know when you call to register.
